What you can buy with 2,500 drams

I saw an avocado in the market today.

They very well might have been there a while, but I don't normally cook because I live with a host family so I barely ever go to the market in town, but I was there today with another volunteer trying to find a lime. So I was pretty surprised when I saw an avocado, several actually, sitting in this one old lady's stall. We asked how much it was and she said 2,500 dram. So while that comes out to about 7 dollars. And while that sounds steep in American terms, this is Armenia. 7 dollars can get you a lot farther than it can in the states. So much in fact, I want to list some other things you can get for 2,500 dram here:

- A round-trip ride from my city to the capital (2-2.5 hours).
- 12 loaves of bread
- 4.5 pounds of the expensive white cheddar we have in my city
- 20 pounds of potatoes
- 25 trips into town on the minibus
- two big bottles of cheap vodka
- A giant bottle of cheap wine
- Or one pretty nice bottle.
- 25 Ice cream bars
- 5 shwarma wraps
