Halloween

We had a Halloween party at the YMCA here in Vanadzor on Saturday. I was Sheriff Seth Bullock, from the show Deadwood. It's strange living in Armenia, I'm really starting to feel American culture slowly drift away in my memory, and even my sensibilities.

It seems that Halloween has changed in the US from what it was at its roots. People get bored of the same costumes, what we might call 'typical' or 'classic' supernatural creatures, so each year Halloween in the US has gotten more topical and, perhaps 'clever.' I watched a video last week of someone going through the stupid 13 costumes you'd see at ever Halloween party. You had some like Snookie (or however you spell that person's name) a blue alien from Avatar, fantasy football as a costume (a guy in a wizard outfit, holding a football), and so on.

And really at this party, there weren't any costumes like that. Even my costume, sure it's a person from Television, but the show Deadwood ended years ago, though I've only just recently watched it. If I had done that costume in the US, people would probably say, oh, that's an old costume, so 4 years ago.

If the Americans came as some pun or a character from a reality show (and really it didn't even cross my mind) the Armenians wouldn't understand them, and Armenians are just starting to test the water, see what this holiday is all about, you gotta know the basics before you start doing the clever costumes. The vampires and witches and pirates are still new and fresh ideas here, and probably will be for years to come. A less jaded version of Halloween.

The party itself resembled a middle school or high school dance. We had a table of food, some pumpkins we carved the night before, and a dance music.

Something that surprised me a lot was that some of the Armenians that came could breakdance. And like really breakdance, not just like messing around, but they were going all out, one kid was even doing back flips.

Fun times and not what I expected.
